During the week of March 7-13, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

During the week of March 7-13, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, 12.

• South Hilo, nine.

• Puna, six.

Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger 21.

So far this year, there have been 231 DUI arrests compared to 189 during the same period last year, an increase of 22.2 percent.

There have been 274 major accidents so far this year compared to 292 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.2 percent.

So far this year, there have been five official traffic fatalities, the same as at this time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
